A long time ago I worked
for Digital Equipment in Alpharetta. It was one of my favorite jobs of
all-time; Digital was an "old school" computer company that appealed to my
"old school" PC sensibilities. The geeks absolutely ran
that place! You know who I'm talking about: those 350+lbs. pound white guys
that had beards, thick glasses with schmutz all over them... guys that never
wore anything other than jeans to work... guys that knew every single Unix
command that ever was, yet didn't know how to format a floppy disk in
Windows. Those guys. Anyway, it was
so much fun that I even started a newspaper -
The Weekly Idiot - that was written, produced, printed and distributed
all on DEC's dime. Now, at most companies your boss would get mad at
you for wasting the company's time and resources on a newspaper dedicated to geek humor
and "news of the weird" stories - but not my boss at DEC. He'd come to
my desk every Friday and ask for a copy! I was looking
for a document on my PC tonight and stumbled across these old issues and had
completely forgotten how funny some of these stories were. I had also
forgotten how bad my graphics design skills are - or, at least were, as all
of these issues were made in Word 97. Even though I
had my boss's implicit permission to write the Idiot, he probably
wouldn't have appreciated me spending all day on it. That's the
"official explanation" for the bad design stuff anyway... Below is a complete
archive of all nine wonderful issues. All of them have been converted
to PDF format, so if you don't have Acrobat Reader, you'll need to download
it to get the ball rolling. Simply click on the PDF icon to download
each issue. And so - without further ado - The Weekly Idiot: |
| |
| |
|
|
 |
VOLUME 1,
NUMBER 1: The inaugural issue from December 5th, 1997. No graphics
whatsoever, no original content and most articles were pulled straight from
Yahoo! But you can see the genius starting to come together!
|
| |
|
|
 |
VOLUME 1,
NUMBER 2: The first issue to feature the infamous "Bill Clinton"
masthead. First issue with a disgusting picture (a man had his arm
ripped off in a tug of war). Also the first issue with a "geek humor"
slant and the first issue to have an "outside" contributor (Tracey Abshire).
|
| |
|
|
 |
VOLUME 1,
NUMBER 3: Lots of graphics. The Mac\Apple bashing begins. |
| |
|
|
 |
VOLUME 1,
NUMBER 4: Submissions by Tom Shortell and the debut of "Ramblings of
Bitter Joe"! Shameless pimpage of the "new" Bond flick
Tomorrow Never
Dies. |
| |
|
|
 |
VOLUME 1,
NUMBER 5: The FANTABULOUS Christmas Issue!! More from
Bitter Joe and a great picture of Santa on fire! WARNING: this
issue is a hefty 591KB. |
| |
|
|
 |
VOLUME 1,
NUMBER 6: First issue for 1998. Bill Clinton replaced on masthead
by Tori Spelling. Main headline: "Woody Allen Marries Soon-Yi!" Contrary to promises on front page, the Weekly Idiot 98 isn't that
much different than Weekly Idiot 97 - except for the exclamation
points everywhere! |
| |
|
|
 |
VOLUME 1,
NUMBER 7: More of the same. In this issue we learn that the Weekly
Idiot is owned by Thought Control Research, Inc., "an unofficial arm of the
Democratic National Committee". |
| |
|
|
 |
VOLUME 1,
NUMBER 8: First issue after Compaq bought DEC. The end is near. First issue with a "serious" article by me. The debut of "Dear Jim"
(ironically it's Dear Jim's only appearance). Lots of
contributions. |
| |
|
|
 |
VOLUME 1,
NUMBER 9: The final issue. Tori Spelling masthead pic replaced by
picture of Bill Gates getting "pied". Rants about the "loss of DEC". First and only full color issue and only issue to be distributed
electronically. |
